Sidney Herald posts menus online
Readers of the Sidney Herald (www.sidneyherald.com) don’t have to wait until they arrive at a restaurant these days to find out what is on the menu.
The online edition of the Sidney Herald, a 3,300-circulation twice-weekly in eastern Montana, added area restaurant menus in May using enhanced special sections by TownNews.com, the same tool the newspaper uses to post the Sidney-Richland County Visitors Guide, the 2009 Bridal Guide and other special sections.
Publisher Libby Berndt says the menus are a hit with her hungry readers.
“Our community loves the menu link,” she says, pointing to positive reader comments posted after the promotion was announced in May.
One reader wrote: “This is a welcome addition to the Sidney Herald site. I have often wished that our area restaurants had Web sites or menus listed in the yellow pages. I hope other restaurants that haven’t posted their menus yet will soon. Thanks Sidney Herald!”
At last count, 11 restaurants are paying the Herald to post their menus online. The TownNews.com creative services team breaks each menu into eye-catching segments that pop out when clicked.
The menu for Millers’ Corner, for example, features 10 segments, including Take and Go Breakfast, House Specialties, Fried Chicken and the ever-important Dessert.
Readers reach the menus by clicking an icon between the leaderboard ad and the weather box near the top of the Herald’s home page.
“A great feature to the menus is each food section is listed separately on the left-hand side, so when you click on that portion it pops up,” a Herald editorial said when announcing the feature. “No need to go through a full menu, if all you are looking for is a salad – you can go straight to the salad section.”
Berndt and her staff considered several online solutions for displaying the menus before, with the assistance of their TownNews.com regional sales manager Linda Rowlee, settling on enhanced special sections. The format, Berndt says, “was so much better – user friendly, the roll-over to different sections of the menu is awesome.”
In the editorial, the Herald thanked Sidney-area restaurants for their support of the promotion:
“Many area food establishments jumped on board and placed their menus online in May. It’s nice to see that Sidney businesses are staying up on technology and partnering with the highest traffic site in the area ― our newspaper’s Web site.”
