TownNews.com and AP offer hNews microformat

Published: Monday, November 2, 2009 9:17 AM CST
The Associated Press and TownNews.com recently agreed to implement the hNews microformat. The AP and Media Standards Trust proposed the hNews standard as part of AP’s initiative to help members identify when other web sites are reusing their content without permission.

So what the heck is hNews? Full information on the XHMTL specification can be found at: http://microformats.org/wiki/hNews. The specification was proposed in the open microformats community to encourage broad adoption of hNews as a standard.

In simpler terms, hNews is a way of being able to place markup coding within a Web page to identify the various parts of the article, such as the source organization, headline, byline, and the content itself. Other important data, such as license terms (if others wish to republish) and geographic information, can be embedded as well.

If you’ve ever looked at the HTML source for a news article, it can be difficult to extract out just the story content from the rest of the formatting, ads, JavaScript and other items on the page. Placing these standard tags around the content makes it easier for web browsers and other software to identify the article portion, and to clearly identify the terms of use.

TownNews.com’s new content management system, BLOX, will support the hNews format. We are pleased to support this new initiative to help our customers enhance their content and protect their intellectual property rights.
