Spark engagement with social media

Published: Monday, November 30, 2009 9:21 AM CST
Social Media is any online technology or practice that lets us share (content, opinions, insights, experiences, media) and have a conversation about the ideas we care about.

Building a community is not as simple as putting up a Web site with discussion topics and hoping that people come and interact there. While you can easily drive people to your community the first time, to really be successful you need to get them to come back. You need them to be engaged with each other and establish relationships, which in turn leads to their engagement with you. That is the goal, after all! Engagement starts with the reader: meet one of their needs and provide a place for them to easily interact, and you will achieve your goals in return.

A good community strategy will help you discover what your consumers want, and a good implementation strategy will help you build the skeleton in which they will interact:

• Be the first in your community with breaking news

• Enable conversations with commenting

• Community Video

• Community photo sharing, rating and commenting

• Geo tag stories

• Hook up with Facebook

• Engage Twitter

• Tap into reader commenting

• Promote community service

• Create niche community interest driven sites
